Rebecca Ugolick is a graduate of West Virginia University (2010) and the North Carolina Central University School of Law (2014). During law school, she interned at the North Carolina Office of the Attorney General and Legal Aid of North Carolina, and clerked for the Honorable Omar J. Aboulhosn, now a federal magistrate judge for the United States District Court for the Southern District of West Virginia. Ugolick volunteered with her law school’s low-income tax clinic, veteran’s law clinic, death penalty project, and innocence project. As a law student, she was recognized by the North Carolina Bar Association for her commitment to pro bono legal services.

What area of law do you practice and what attracted you to that area of law?

I always knew I wanted to be a lawyer. My passion for advocacy is in my blood. I am a third-generation attorney following in the footsteps of my father, attorney William O. Huffman, and my grandfather, the late Sen. Odell H. Huffman of West Virginia.

After law school, I had to figure out what area of the law suited me best. Since obtaining my license in 2014, my experience has been diverse including family and business immigration, domestic matters, criminal defense, corporate law, and general civil litigation. After practicing in a small firm in Raleigh and a “big law” firm made up of almost 800 attorneys, I found my calling.

In September 2018, I joined Howard, Stallings, From, Atkins, Angell & Davis, P.A. in Raleigh as an associate focusing on personal injury, medical malpractice, and general civil litigation. I enjoy working with the attorneys at Howard Stallings who challenge me but allow me to use legal creativity to help those who are injured.

What career accomplishments are you most proud of?

We made headlines in December 2018 when Robby Jessup and I tried a controversial wrongful death case in Harnett County to a successful verdict for the client. This was the most rewarding experience of my career, not because a large verdict was returned, but because we were able to help a family achieve justice for their son when the criminal justice system failed.

When you are not working, how do you like to spend most of your time?

In my spare time, I enjoy traveling with my husband, Cory, to explore the newest restaurants and breweries. I also love to be outdoors and to spend time on the water.
